ele:mental Artist Focus: Jeff Rau

19 Sep

Leading up to ele:mental’s opening reception on September 27 (7-9pm) at the Beacon Arts Building, we will feature one artist in the show every few days on this blog. Today’s focus is interdisciplinary artist Jeff Rau.

The art of observation is increasingly lost upon each passing generation. Notions of the ephemeral and fleeting are abstractions when so much of our experience can be documented, shared, and archived – yet, Jeff Rau (b. 1978, Long Beach) uses all three of these tactics in order to typify the transitory. With Southern California as his backdrop, Rau explores the whimsical curiosity intrinsic to simple pleasures and converts it into informal science experiments. Rau’s exploratory performances highlight our innately oblivious tendencies, painstakingly documenting subtle environmental changes or interventions in public space. Ultimately, his work leads to a heightened awareness for both the artist and his bewildered bystanders.

Rau received his M.F.A. from California State University, Fullerton. He lives and works in Long Beach, CA.
